Danny the Champion of the World

This picture book was the final project of my degree. I spent six weeks sketching, planning and finalising the book's final cover, endpapers and pages.

I chose Danny the Champion of the World as my text because it was always mine and my mum’s favourite audiobook to listen to in the car as a child. It’s based not far from where I live in Oxfordshire so I worked on location in the village of Great Missenden for my references. The story follows the relationship of a boy and his father as they plan the biggest pheasant poach ever attempted. During this project, I fell in love with painting the English countryside and birds, specifically pheasants. I used gouache and coloured pencils on pressed paper for each illustration.
